What is Self-Esteem?

June 15, 2024 by Shiloh Martin, LPC-S, CCMHC

Self-esteem refers to the subjective opinion an individual holds about themselves. It encompasses our beliefs and feelings about our value, worth, and abilities. Low self-esteem can have negative consequences, including depression, anxiety, and relationship difficulties. Improving self-esteem is essential for enhancing overall wellbeing and quality of life. In this post, we will discuss what self-esteem is and how you can improve yours.

What is Self-Esteem?

Self-esteem is the belief we have about ourselves, including our abilities, values, and worth. It involves an evaluation of our traits, both positive and negative. A person with high self-esteem tends to have a positive view of themselves, which helps them navigate life with confidence and resilience. In contrast, low self-esteem can lead to negative self-talk, self-doubt, and insecurity.

How to Improve Self-Esteem

  • Practice self-compassion: Self-compassion involves treating yourself with kindness and understanding, even when you make mistakes or face challenges. Research has shown that individuals who practice self-compassion tend to have higher self-esteem and are less prone to depression and anxiety.
  • Set realistic goals: Setting goals can help you achieve a sense of accomplishment and increase your self-esteem. However, it is essential to set realistic and achievable goals. Unrealistic goals can lead to disappointment, frustration, and a further decrease in self-esteem.
  • Surround yourself with positive people: The people around us can influence our thoughts and emotions. Surrounding yourself with positive people who believe in you can help you feel good about yourself and increase your self-esteem.
  • Focus on your strengths: Instead of dwelling on your weaknesses, focus on your strengths. Everyone has unique talents and abilities, and recognizing and utilizing them can increase your self-esteem.
  • Practice self-care: Practicing self-care is essential for overall wellbeing and can help improve self-esteem. Engage in activities that make you feel good, such as exercise, meditation, or hobbies.
  • Challenge negative self-talk: Negative self-talk can be a significant barrier to self-esteem. When you catch yourself engaging in negative self-talk, challenge it by questioning whether the thought is accurate and whether you would say the same thing to a friend.

In conclusion, self-esteem is essential for overall wellbeing, and improving it requires intentional effort. By practicing self-compassion, setting realistic goals, surrounding yourself with positive people, focusing on your strengths, practicing self-care, and challenging negative self-talk, you can improve your self-esteem and live a happier, more fulfilling life.
