What is stress?

April 26, 2024 by Shiloh Martin, LPC-S, CCMHC

Stress is a common problem that affects millions of people worldwide. It can be caused by various factors such as work pressure, family issues, financial problems, and health concerns. If you’re feeling stressed out, it’s important to know that you’re not alone. Many people struggle with stress, and it’s essential to learn how to manage it effectively.

What is stress?

Stress is a physical and psychological response to a perceived threat. When you encounter a stressful situation, your body produces a hormone called cortisol, which triggers the fight-or-flight response. This response is designed to protect you in dangerous situations, but when it’s activated frequently, it can cause health problems.

Signs of stress

Stress can manifest itself in different ways. Some of the most common signs of stress include:

  • Anxiety / Depression / Fatigue
  • Headaches / Insomnia / Irritability
  • Muscle tension / Rapid heartbeat / Shortness of breath

Stress can also contribute to other health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and obesity.

How to manage stress

Managing stress is essential for your overall health and wellbeing. Here are some tips for managing stress:

  1. Exercise regularly: Exercise releases endorphins, which can help reduce stress and improve your mood.
  2. Practice relaxation techniques: Techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and yoga can help you relax and reduce stress.
  3. Get enough sleep: Lack of sleep can contribute to stress, so it’s important to get enough sleep each night.
  4. Eat a healthy diet: Eating a balanced diet can help reduce stress and improve your overall health.
  5. Manage your time: Make a schedule and prioritize your tasks to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  6. Talk to someone: If you’re feeling stressed, talking to someone you trust can help you feel better.

Here are 5 apps that can help with stress awareness:

  1. Headspace: This popular meditation app offers a variety of guided meditations, including ones focused on stress management and relaxation.
  2. Calm: Another popular meditation app, Calm offers guided meditations, breathing exercises, and other tools to help users manage stress and anxiety.
