Surgical Weight Loss Psychological Assessment

December 11, 2023 by Shiloh Martin, LPC-S, CCMHC

Surgical weight loss is a major step towards improving the health and quality of life for individuals who have struggled with obesity. However, before undergoing any bariatric procedure, it is important to undergo a psychological evaluation to ensure that the individual is a suitable candidate for the procedure.

A surgical weight loss psychological screening involves a series of evaluations designed to assess an individual’s mental and emotional well-being. The screening process typically includes an evaluation of an individual’s eating habits, psychological history, and any past experiences with weight loss.

One of the primary objectives of the psychological screening is to determine whether the individual has a realistic understanding of the surgical process, the necessary lifestyle changes required after the procedure, and the expected outcome. This is important because individuals who are not fully committed to the process may struggle to comply with the necessary changes and may not achieve the desired results.

Additionally, the psychological screening may also identify any underlying psychological issues that could contribute to the individual’s struggle with obesity. For example, individuals who struggle with emotional eating or binge eating may benefit from therapy to address these issues before undergoing the procedure.

It is important to note that the psychological screening is not a pass or fail test, but rather a tool to identify areas of concern that can be addressed before and after the procedure. This can increase the chances of a successful outcome and improve the individual’s overall well-being.

Surgical weight loss is a significant decision that requires careful consideration and preparation. A psychological screening is an important part of the pre-operative process and helps to ensure that individuals are ready to make the necessary changes to achieve a successful outcome. If you are considering bariatric surgery, your doctor may require undergoing a psychological evaluation as part of your pre-operative process.
