Feeling Anxious – About Being Anxious

November 1, 2023 by Shiloh Martin, LPC-S, CCMHC

Anxiety is a common experience for many people. It’s a feeling of unease, such as worry or fear, that can be mild or severe. For some individuals, anxiety can become a chronic condition that interferes with their daily life. However, for others, the fear of having anxiety can cause additional anxiety, creating a vicious cycle of worry and fear.

Feeling anxious about feeling anxious is a condition known as meta-anxiety or anxiety about anxiety. This type of anxiety is common among individuals who already have an anxiety disorder, but it can also occur in people who have never experienced anxiety before.

Meta-anxiety can be distressing and can make it difficult for individuals to manage their anxiety. It can also cause them to become more self-conscious, leading to increased worry about their symptoms and their ability to control them. The fear of having a panic attack or becoming anxious in public can also cause individuals to avoid certain situations, which can limit their ability to live a fulfilling life.

The good news is that meta-anxiety can be treated, and there are many effective strategies that individuals can use to manage their anxiety and reduce their fear of anxiety. Some of these strategies include:

  1. Mindfulness: Practicing mindfulness can help individuals focus on the present moment and reduce their worries about the future. Mindfulness exercises, such as deep breathing and meditation, can help calm the mind and reduce anxiety.
  2. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): CBT is a type of therapy that can help individuals understand and change their thoughts and behaviors related to anxiety. It can help individuals identify negative thoughts and patterns and replace them with more positive and helpful ones.
  3. Exposure therapy: Exposure therapy involves gradually facing the situations that trigger anxiety in a controlled and safe environment. This can help individuals build confidence and reduce their fear of anxiety.
  4. Medication: Anti-anxiety medication can also be helpful in treating meta-anxiety. However, it’s important to work with a mental health professional to determine the right treatment plan for each individual.

In conclusion, feeling anxious about feeling anxious is a real and distressing condition. However, it can be managed with the right treatment and support. If you or someone you know is struggling with meta-anxiety, it’s important to seek help from a mental health professional. With the right tools and support, individuals can overcome their anxiety and live a happier, more fulfilling life.
