What is Allostatic Load?

October 29, 2023 by Shiloh Martin, LPC-S, CCMHC

Allostatic load is a term used to describe the cumulative wear and tear on the body as a result of chronic exposure to physical and psychological stressors. It refers to the physiological changes that occur in response to stress, which over time, can lead to a breakdown in the body’s functioning and increase the risk of various health problems.

The body has a built-in stress response system, called the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, that helps it to cope with stressors. This system activates the release of stress hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline, which help to regulate the body’s physiological responses. However, when the HPA axis is constantly activated, as is often the case with chronic stress, it can lead to changes in the body’s functioning, such as increased inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and oxidative stress.

Allostatic load is thought to play a role in the development of a wide range of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, depression, and cognitive decline. Chronic exposure to stress can also disrupt the functioning of the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections and other health problems.

There are several factors that can contribute to allostatic load, including genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors. For example, individuals who are predisposed to high levels of stress hormones may be more likely to experience allostatic load. Similarly, lifestyle factors such as a poor diet, lack of physical activity, and lack of sleep can also contribute to allostatic load.

There are several ways to reduce allostatic load and improve overall health. One of the most effective ways is to reduce exposure to stressors and manage stress in a healthy manner. This can involve practicing relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga, engaging in regular physical activity, and eating a healthy, balanced diet. Additionally, getting enough sleep and managing chronic medical conditions can also help to reduce allostatic load.

In conclusion, allostatic load is a term used to describe the cumulative wear and tear on the body as a result of chronic exposure to physical and psychological stressors. It plays a role in the development of a wide range of health problems and can be reduced by reducing exposure to stressors, managing stress in a healthy manner, and making positive lifestyle changes. By understanding the concept of allostatic load, individuals can take steps to improve their overall health and reduce their risk of developing stress-related health problems.
