Our Perception Makes Our Reality

September 17, 2023 by Shiloh Martin, LPC-S, CCMHC

Have you ever heard the phrase “perception is reality”?

This statement suggests that our perception of the world around us shapes the reality that we experience. Our beliefs, attitudes, and experiences all play a role in shaping how we interpret the world and the events that happen within it.

For example, if someone has a positive outlook on life, they are likely to see the good in things and interpret events in a positive light. On the other hand, if someone has a negative outlook, they may tend to focus on the negative aspects of situations and see the world in a negative way. This idea can be applied to many different aspects of our lives, from our relationships with others to our experiences in the workplace.

The power of suggestion

One of the key ways that our perception shapes our reality is through the power of suggestion.

Our beliefs and attitudes can be influenced by the suggestions of others, especially those we trust and respect. For example, if someone you admire says that a particular task is easy, you are more likely to believe that it is easy and approach it with a positive attitude, which can in turn make the task easier to complete.

Your past experiences

Another factor that shapes our perception is our past experiences. Our experiences shape our beliefs and attitudes, and these in turn influence how we perceive the world. For example, if someone has had negative experiences with a particular type of person or situation, they may approach these experiences with fear and mistrust, which can create a self-fulfilling prophecy. On the other hand, if someone has had positive experiences with a particular type of person or situation, they may approach these experiences with hope and excitement, which can create a positive outcome.

It is important to understand that our perception of the world is not set in stone.

We have the power to change the way we see things by changing our beliefs and attitudes. By adopting a more positive outlook on life and being open to new experiences and perspectives, we can start to shape our reality in a more positive way.

In conclusion, our perception makes our reality. The beliefs and attitudes that we hold, the suggestions of others, and our past experiences all play a role in shaping the way we see the world and the events that happen within it. By being mindful of the way our perception influences our reality, we can start to shape our experiences in a more positive way.
