Socratic Terapia

April 25, 2023 by Shiloh Martin, LPC-S, CCMHC

Socratic Therapeia

Known as Socratic therapy, is a philosophical approach to therapy that draws inspiration from the teachings of Socrates, the ancient Greek philosopher. The term “therapeia” refers to a process of healing or care, which is a central component of this approach.

At the heart of Socratic therapeia is the idea that individuals possess within themselves the capacity for wisdom and insight. The role of the therapist, in this case, is not to provide solutions or prescribe treatments but rather to facilitate the individual’s own self-examination and discovery of their beliefs and values.

Encourages individuals to consider different perspectives

Socratic therapy encourages individuals to question their assumptions and beliefs, challenging them to examine the evidence for their beliefs and to consider alternative perspectives. The therapist acts as a guide, helping the individual to navigate this process of self-discovery, and encouraging them to develop their own capacity for critical thinking and reflection.

Fosters Deeper Understanding

The goal of Socratic therapy is not simply to resolve a specific issue or problem, but rather to foster a deeper understanding of oneself and the world. This process of self-examination can lead to greater self-awareness, increased resilience, and a greater sense of purpose and meaning in life.

Socratic therapy is often used in conjunction with other therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or psychodynamic therapy. It can be particularly effective for individuals who are struggling with existential or philosophical questions, or who are seeking a more holistic approach to therapy.

Capacity for self-discovery and growth

Overall, Socratic therapy offers a unique and powerful approach to therapy, one that emphasizes the individual’s own capacity for self-discovery and growth. By encouraging individuals to question their assumptions and beliefs, it can help them to develop greater insight and resilience, leading to a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
