What is work-life balance, and why is it important?
In short, work-life balance is the state of equilibrium where a person equally prioritizes the demands of one’s career and the demands of one’s personal life.
We all experience stress from time to time and, in the short term, it can help us cope with some of life’s challenges. However, when stress is prolonged, it can be damaging to both physical and mental health.
Work-life balance does not mean an equal balance of time spent on each area. Work-life balance is not defined by hours spent but rather by the outcomes. Moreover, psychological detachment is about mentally switching off from work-related issues during off-time; it is not about caring less when at work, which may also be problematic.
Work-life balance choices are different for each of us because we all have different priorities and lives.
The very first thing to do is ….
Take a step back and ask yourself: What is currently causing me stress, unbalance, or dissatisfaction? How are these circumstances affecting how I perform and engage with my job? How are they impacting my personal life? What am I prioritizing? What am I sacrificing? What is getting lost? Only after you take a mental pause and acknowledge these factors can you begin to tackle them.
