Consultation (con·sul·ta·tion): “a meeting with an expert or professional in order to seek advice.”
The act of exchanging information and opinions about something in order to reach a better understanding of it or to make a decision, or a meeting for this purpose.
What is the role of a consultant?
Consultants are hired to share their expertise and knowledge to help businesses attain goals and solve problems. Sometimes, companies bring on consultants to perform day-to-day work and augment or supplement staff—and save the fixed overhead costs associated with a full-time employee.
I provide two different types of consultation services: Mental Health Consultations and Business Management Consultations.
Mental Health Consulting
Mental health consultation has several subtypes, including client-centered consultation, which focuses the consultant’s attention on effective intervention for the client; and consultee-centered consultation, in which the consultant focuses on remedying areas in the consultee instead of solely addressing the problems of the client.
Business Management Consulting
Management consulting includes a broad range of activities, and the many firms and their members often define these practices quite differently. The more useful way of analyzing the Business Management Consulting is to consider its purposes; clarity about goals certainly influences an engagement’s success. Here are consulting’s eight fundamental objectives, arranged hierarchically.
- Providing information to a client.
- Solving a client’s problems.
- Making a diagnosis, which may necessitate redefinition of the problem.
- Making recommendations based on the diagnosis.
- Assisting with implementation of recommended solutions.
- Building a consensus and commitment around corrective action.
- Facilitating client learning—that is, teaching clients how to resolve similar problems in the future.
- Permanently improving organizational effectiveness.
Functions 1 through 5 are generally considered basic consultation areas.
Function 6 through 8 are rarely addressed explicitly.
Goals 6 through 8 are best considered by-products of earlier purposes, not additional objectives that become relevant only when the other purposes have been achieved. They are essential to effective consulting even if not recognized as explicit goals when the engagement begins.
With over 20 years in the business arena, I have held various roles and responsibilities. Experience ranges from starting, managing, and operating a small 8 clinician private practice to being State Director of Psychological Health Outreach Program for Hawaii Air National Guard. At the leadership level, I have been a Managing Partner, a CFO and a CEO. I started a mental health agency and within 5 years sold it for a 6-figure profit. This is not a typical result but was a highlight of my success I wanted to share.
