Commando Parenting

April 22, 2025 by Shiloh Martin, LPC-S, CCMHC

Parenting styles and techniques have evolved over the years. From the traditional authoritarian style to the more permissive and child-centered style, parents have a lot of options to choose from. However, one style of parenting that has sparked controversy in recent years is the so-called “commando parenting.”

Commando parenting is a parenting style characterized by a strict, no-nonsense approach to child-rearing. It emphasizes discipline, obedience, and control. Proponents of this style argue that it is necessary to raise children who are respectful, responsible, and disciplined. They believe that children need structure and boundaries to feel safe and secure. On the other hand, critics argue that commando parenting is too harsh and can be damaging to children’s mental health.

One of the main features of commando parenting is the use of strict rules and consequences. Parents who use this style of parenting often have a long list of rules and regulations that children must follow, and they enforce these rules with harsh consequences. For example, a child who breaks a rule might be punished with loss of privileges or physical punishment.

Another key aspect of commando parenting is the focus on obedience. Children are expected to obey their parents without question, and disobedience is not tolerated. This can lead to a tense and authoritarian household, where children feel like they have no say in their own lives.

Supporters of commando parenting argue that it is necessary to raise children who are well-behaved and respectful. They believe that children who are raised with too much freedom and too little discipline are more likely to be disrespectful, disobedient, and even delinquent. They also argue that children need structure and boundaries to feel safe and secure.

Critics, on the other hand, argue that commando parenting is too harsh and can lead to emotional and psychological damage in children. They believe that children raised in this way may feel anxious, fearful, and insecure. They also argue that commando parenting can damage the parent-child relationship, making it harder for children to trust their parents and seek their support when they need it.

Commando parenting is a controversial parenting style that emphasizes discipline, obedience, and control. While supporters argue that it is necessary to raise well-behaved and respectful children, critics argue that it can be too harsh and damaging to children’s mental health. As with any parenting style, it is important to find a balance between structure and freedom, discipline and love. Parents should consider their children’s individual needs and personalities when deciding on a parenting style, and seek out the advice and support of professionals if they have concerns.
