Improvement by Subtraction

August 16, 2024 by Shiloh Martin, LPC-S, CCMHC

Practitioners Striving to Make a Bigger Impact

In today’s fast-paced world, many practitioners are striving to make a bigger impact by doing more and more. They believe that if they work harder, longer, and take on more projects, they will be able to achieve their goals and make a difference in their field. However, sometimes, the key to making a bigger impact is through improvement by subtraction.

Improvement by subtraction is the process of removing unnecessary or ineffective elements to create a better outcome. This concept can be applied to many different areas of life, including personal relationships, work, and even our daily routines. By eliminating the unnecessary, we can focus our energy on what truly matters, and achieve more with less.

In the world of practitioners, there are several ways in which improvement by subtraction can be applied to make a bigger impact. Here are some examples:

Focus on a Specific Area of Expertise

One of the biggest challenges practitioners face is spreading themselves too thin. They try to be good at everything, but end up being average at best. Instead of trying to do it all, practitioners should focus on their areas of expertise. By specializing in a particular field, they can become a true expert and make a bigger impact.

Prioritize High-Impact Activities

Practitioners often find themselves bogged down with low-impact activities that take up their time and energy. By prioritizing high-impact activities, they can focus on the tasks that truly matter and make a bigger impact. This means saying no to tasks that don’t align with their goals and delegating tasks that can be done by others.

Eliminate Distractions

In today’s digital age, it’s easy to get distracted by social media, emails, and other notifications. Practitioners should take steps to eliminate distractions and focus on their work. This might mean turning off notifications, scheduling specific times to check emails, or working in a distraction-free environment.

Streamline Processes

Many practitioners have processes that are outdated or inefficient. By streamlining processes, they can save time and energy, and focus on the tasks that truly matter. This might mean automating certain tasks, simplifying workflows, or reorganizing workspaces.

In conclusion, practitioners who strive to make a bigger impact should consider improvement by subtraction. By focusing on their areas of expertise, prioritizing high-impact activities, eliminating distractions, and streamlining processes, they can achieve more with less. It’s not about doing more, but doing better. By applying the concept of improvement by subtraction, practitioners can make a bigger impact in their field and beyond.
